BURLINGTON, WA – A running game and defense reminiscent of the glory days of Burlington-Edison football powered the Tigers into the postseason, and to a 14-7 victory over Sedro-Woolley in Northwest Conference 2A high school football action at Roland Kirkby Field. The game was webcast live by SkagitRadioSports.com, and the free replay is available below.
Facing the possibility of being left out of the playoffs for the first time since the mid 2000′s, and tied 7-7 late in the third quarter, Burlington-Edison’s offense looked like it turned back the clock 25 or 35 years, power-running to a 17-play, 93-yard touchdown drive that consumed 8 minutes and 16 seconds.
After junior running back Tyler Morrison pounded-out most of the yardage during the drive, on his way to 134 yards on 34 carries, quarterback Dalton Schwetz followed Morrison and fullback Jeff Bajema around left end and into the endzone from 5-yards out to score the game winner for the Tigers.
Morrison scored the first Burlington-Edison touchdown in the first quarter on a 4-yard blast and Tanner Gates added both extra points for the Tigers. Schwetz complimented Morrison’s running by completing 9-of-13 passes for 124 yards.
A few personnel changes on defense for Burlington-Edison appeared to make a big difference, as the Tigers held what had been a potent Sedro-Woolley offense in recent weeks to just 90 total yards , including a meager 24 yards on 19 second half plays.
Sedro-Woolley was in the game throughout, capitalizing on an Anthony Cann interception in the second quarter with a 9-play, 45-yard drive capped by Shawn Kennedy’s 4-yard touchdown run. Kennedy led the Cubs with 37 yards on 10 carries and Clayton Johnson ran four times for 35 yards. Sedro-Woolley completed just 2-of-12 passes for 12 yards in windy and rain-soaked conditions.
With the victory, Burlington-Edison (6-3 overall, 4-2 NWC2A) earned the second seed into the Bi-District 2A playoffs, and the Tiger will be back on Kirkby Field hosting Lake Washington at 7 p.m. next Friday, Nov. 2.
The loss dropped the Cubs (4-5, 3-4) into the fourth and final Class 2A playoff berth from the Northwest Conference, sending Sedro-Woolley to play Lakewood on the Cougars home field, also next Friday, Nov. 2, with the kickoff time still to be determined.
