BURLINGTON, WA – Senior Dalton Schwetz capped his streak of stellar seasons for the Burlington-Edison Tigers with a gutsy performance both pitching and fielding in leading the Tigers to a 2-0 win over Sehome in Northwest Conference action Monday afternoon.

Schwetz not only pitched a complete game shutout that included six strikeouts while scattering just three hits, but in a performance that typified his will to win, the three sport star also added six assists while making several excellent fielding plays, none better than for the final out of the game, season, and high school career.

Sehome pinch-hitter Justin Reilly, who represented the tying run, hit a well placed slow roller near the first base line that Schwetz, after falling in an effort to pick it up, turned into a spectacular play by flipping the ball nearly blindly to first baseman Austin Von Herbulis to seal the Tigers’ victory. As if his aforementioned contributions weren’t enough already, Schwetz also retired 10 straight Mariner hitters from the fourth through seventh innings and 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.

While the day belonged to Schwetz and his senior teammates, younger brother and sophomore Mason Schwetz appeared ready to step-in at shortstop with two solid plays in the field in which he unleashed strong throws for outs at first, and an excellent bunt to drive in Burlington-Edison’s first of two fourth inning runs.

Seniors Aaron Daut, Von Herbulis, Kieran McMahon, Nathan Reisnour, Ryan Wade, and Derek Wieringa all played their final games in blue and gold, with Reisnour leading off the Tigers’ first inning with a base hit and driving in the second Burlington-Edison run with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated McMahon with the final Tiger run.

Along with those seniors playing their final games, the future of Tigers’ baseball was also showcased, with sophomore center fielder Hunter Jacobsen and junior third baseman Drew Lomsdalen adding base hits, along with sophomore right fielder Nic Metcalf making three solid defensive plays while nearly hitting .400 for the season.

Though his team was eliminated from post season play for the first time in his head coaching tenure and the first time in 23 years overall, head coach John Thurmond was pleased with the way the Tigers played. “We really played well today and most of the season,” Thurmond said in a post-game interview exclusive to SkagitRadioSports.com. “We hate that we’re not playing after today, but we lost some really tough games to excellent teams. We really did have a good year,” Thurmond concluded.

A Burlington-Edison baseball tradition since hall of fame head coach, and current assistant Jim Clem took over the program in 1979, the Tigers finished another winning season with an 11-8 overall record and were 8-4 in Northwest Conference play, finishing just one win shy of a district tournament berth.

SPOKANE, WA – The La Conner Braves earned the 4th place trophy at the State 2B Basketball Tournament with one of the greatest comebacks our play-by-play announcer has witnessed in the 1100+ games he’s broadcast/webcast during the last 35 years.

Led by Spencer Novak’s 28 points, including 7-8 fourth period free throws, the Braves, who trailed by 14 in the final quarter, outscored the Crusaders 22-4 the rest of the game to win, 61-57, and finish the season with a 25-2 record.

Tyler Howlett scored 16 points for La Conner, Hudson Zavala grabbed a team leading nine rebounds and added five points, including the go-ahead score on an assist from Novak with 14 seconds left, while Sean Hulbert and Jamaal James each contributed six points to the La Conner win.

Northwest Christian had previously won five state titles in six years, but the loss to La Conner left them with this year’s 6th place trophy.

ANACORTES, WA – Withstanding a furious second half comeback in which Anacortes battled-back from a 16-point halftime deficit to tie the game five times, Burlington-Edison pulled away in the final minutes to advance into the Bi-District 2A Boys’ Basketball Tournament championship game and also earned a berth in the regional round of the state tournament with a 71-63 win over the Seahawks.

Isaak Davies got the Tigers off to a fast start, scoring the game’s first five points to pace Burlington-Edison to a 23-9 lead after the first eight minutes. Davies led all scorers with 28 points, including four 3-point field goals, and he also calmly canned five of seven free throws in the game’s final minutes.

Rudy Mataya’s three free throws with one tenth of a second left in the second quarter clock put the Tigers on top 35-19 at halftime.

After failing to make a single first half 3-pointer and converting just 1 of 8 free throws, Anacortes erupted for 26 third quarter points, led by the balanced scoring that has been a Seahawk’s trademark this season. A.J. Yost, held scoreless in the first half, scored seven in the third period, while Sam D’Amelio and Billy King, who combined for just four first half points, scored eight points each in the third stanza for Anacortes, as the Seahawks trailed 46-45 heading into the fourth quarter.

With the game tied for the fifth and final time at 59-59, Davies, Daron Browning and Austin Von Herbulis lifted Burlington-Edison to victory. Browning drained two clutch three-pointers and scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, Davies hit a paid of field goals to compliment his five free throws, and Von Hebulis scored six of his 10 points in the final eight minutes.

Burlington-Edison will play Northwest Conference and defending state champion Lynden in the Bi-District title game Friday night at Mount Vernon High School, which will be webcast live by SkagitRadioSports.com.

The game-winning shot resulted from Rudy Mataya’s offensive rebound and pass to Browning, who drained his fifth three-pointer of the game to finish with 17 points.

Burlington-Edison’s Isaak Davies led all scorers with 22 points while Austin Von Herbulis tallied 13 points, all in the second half.

Mount Vernon was led by Casey Leek’s 19 points, Miles Witt scored 17 and Andrew Roozen added 12 points for the Bulldogs.

LAKEWOOD – The Burlington-Edison High School girls’ volleyball team capped another outstanding season with a sixth place finish at the Class 2A State Tournment Saturday afternoon at Lakes High School.
